Back in what feels like another life, I spent a few Christmases in and around Munich. The holidays in Europe are really special and I easily fell in love with Germany at this time of the year. One of my absolute favourite things to do and best memories while living there was walking around the picturesque Christmas markets, buying small gifts and yummy treats, and listening to the carolers…all while sipping on a hot cup of mulled wine. Ahhh memories! And now, every Christmas, without fail, I need to make a batch for myself (sometimes I share with friends and family hehe), to bring me back to those cobblestone streets once again. I would love to share my very delicious mulled wine recipe with you now! First thing’s first though…you may want to experiment with which wine you use. I recommend wines that can stand up to the heat a bit better – a good zinfandel, bordeaux blend or even your favourite merlot can all work great for this recipe! And no need to break the bank…mulled wine is delicious even using less costly wines.
What You’ll Need
- Your wine of course!
- A few slices of orange and some zest
- Cinnamon sticks (three for the pot and then use others for garnish!)
- A pinch of Nutmeg
- A few whole cloves
- A tablespoon of honey
- About 1/4 cup of brown sugar (this is really up to you though! Needing a bit more sweetness? Add more!)
- Optional – a touch of brandy!
Combine all of the ingredients in a large pot and place on low heat. Low and slow is the name of the game! You want to let it simmer and soak in all those spices. You never want to overheat the mixture or burn it! Try for around 20 minutes on low heat and then ladle into glasses and enjoy with a friend!
Come the festive season, there’s really nothing better than a cup of warm, spiced mulled wine! Plus, your house will smell heavenly with this drink simmering on the stove!
Thank you to Diana from 204 Park for sharing a glass with me and for Breanne Marie Photography for capturing the magic. Merry Christmas! XO
