Remember when I shared our finished fireplace design, and then later on opened up the discussion of furniture placement around it? Well, the saga continues with a third fireplace instalment and this one is oh so much fun! I’ve long admired those beautiful photos on Pinterest of garland covered mantels, delicately placed candles and stockings hung with care. There’s something so special about a fireplace decked out for the holidays and for years I wished for my own. The move into the Ravine House answered my fireplace prayers and so finally, this year, I get to consider some Christmas fireplace decor!!
The timing also couldn’t have been more perfect when Wayfair asked me to share my holiday mantel styling. I was really excited to join in on the fun, but the only problem was…we don’t have a mantel on our fireplace! And so, for this post, I had to get a little creative and find ways around the missing mantel issue. Here’s how I decided to create my festive fireplace using classic decor…sans mantel…My design style is pretty minimalistic in general and I’m no different when it comes to Christmas decor. I wanted to keep my fireplace classic and simple, inspired by my love of Scandinavian design. So, I added a small amount of greenery and hung a wreath in the centre of the fireplace. I used a basic command strip and hook so that I didn’t do any damage to the tile underneath. Just because I don’t have a mantel doesn’t mean I can’t visualize one…and so I did just that and hung the wreath above where I envisioned it being. This simple addition makes a big impact, especially against the black tiles. I used two more command strips to hang the stockings. These knit stockings fit my style perfectly – neutral with just a bit of shimmer. The bronze detail actually works beautifully next to the wood logs and flooring, pulling together similar tones. For me, texture is a big part of decorating and my fireplace decor is definitely not lacking in it! I took two of my faux fur rugs and used them on both sides of the fireplace, almost as anchors. On the left, I placed two matte black lanterns – I felt I needed a bit of candlelight and this seemed like a great compromise to candles atop a mantel. I took the other faux fur rug and draped it inside my wicker basket (the basket that seems to have a million uses!!). It ended up making the perfect storage spot for Christmas presents.
This space already feels so much cozier. Even my dear Shya is starting to gravitate here, nestling up in front of the fire. I can already see Christmas night here, family all around, a fire lit and maybe a roasted marshmallow or two. I am so ready to start some holiday traditions in this home that will lead to some beautiful memories with our family. And so, even though it is very simple, this Christmas fireplace decor fits me just fine. With its sweet simplicity comes a classic style that seems effortless and allows those few elements to really shine.
As a fellow person without mantel, I can totally understand the frustrations of trying to decorate without one! That being said, beautiful! I love the slate (?) on the fireplace wall, and how it’s all so simple yet impactful
Thank you so much Ariel! Yes, it’s definitely more challenging! But I actually love the simplicity! XO
Love the minimalist style of your sans-mantel fireplace 🙂
Thanks so much Nicole!!
