2016 Home Decor Trends – 10 Design Ideas to Look Out For This Year

It’s always exciting to see a new year in design unfold before our very eyes. At the start of the year, I’m always loading up on magazines and checking out all the major blogs to see what is new and trending in the world of interiors. And so far, things are looking like a steady, almost seamless transition from decor trends we were seeing in 2015. I would hazard to say that nothing I’ve noticed is really necessarily surprising, but it’s exciting nonetheless. I do plan to take on more design projects in 2016, so you just may see my own blog showcasing some of these 2016 home decor trends I’ve rounded up for your viewing pleasure!

Scandinavian Style2016 home decor trends

The Swedes still remain supreme with their design aesthetic. Soft, minimalistic and incredibly warm, interiors that are Scandi inspired are not going anywhere in 2016.

Geometric 2016 home decor trends 2016 home decor trends

This is one of my favourite trends this year: the geometric patterns we are seeing, especially in the bathroom. I love the giant hexagon tiles used in the first example, with dark grey grout that highlights the shape even further. And how about those mirrors? Playing with pattern and shape has never looked so good! (PS look out for cement tiles too. My current obsession!)

The ‘Glamily’ Roomdream home design

A new word has been coined in the design world – glamily! And it basically takes the family room we all know and love and keeps it looking stylish, even if there are dogs and kids ready to shed all over everything and spill their drink on the sofa. The glamily room is meant to have hard-working, easy to clean fabrics so that it can still be glamorous and useable with a busy family.

Colour Trends – Jewel Tones to Pastels2016 home decor trends 2016 home decor trends

Before I say that colour is coming on with full force, I want to be clear that white is still hugely on point in the interiors world. What I love about the new colour trends though is that they’re very diverse. Thanks to Pantone’s colours of the year, there will most definitely be a rise in the pretty, soft pastels. But on the other side of things, jewel tones are making a huge comeback and going dark is uber glamorous.

Mixed Metals2016 home decor trends

You’ve probably heard this before…you no longer have to keep everything in your kitchen chrome or match every single metal in your living room perfectly. Mixing metals is a huge trend. But it can also be a very daunting one if you aren’t design savvy. Check out this post for some good how to pointers.

Mismatched Cabinetsbefore & after

Another trend I love! Whether it’s a mismatched island, or different uppers than lowers, having a varied look in your kitchen is really current and fun. We did white upper cabinets and wood base cabinets in our Capilano flip and it was one of our favourite designs to date. I would love to try black base cabinets in the next flip…

Bringing the Outside In2016 home decor trends

I think this trend really applies to those living in colder winter climates like myself. Bringing in a natural element adds so much to a space – texture, colour, and even better air circulation. This design trend is also about having multi purpose furniture than can live both inside and outside too!

Globally Inspired2016 home decor trends

When it comes to global shapes and patterns, this trend demands a clean backdrop in which to shine. It’s all about a modern mix and not being overly busy. I love the look above – some layered rugs underneath a clean black tiled fireplace.

Oversized Art2016 home decor trends

Though I still love my gallery walls, 2016 is all about the oversized art. Try buying original artwork off Etsy, something pretty from Minted or hey, even making your own DIY and place it over the sofa, above your bed or right as you walk in your front entry.

Serene & Simple2016 home decor trends

And last but not least, I’ve been really noticing a push for decluttered spaces. Think subdued rooms without a lot on the walls – or even without much in the room at all really! A more paired down approach really lends more importance to what you do have in the room and can make a huge impact!

So there you have it – my 2016 home decor trends! What are your thoughts? Would you attempt any of the designs above or have you been inspired by something else? I would love to hear your ideas in the comments below!
