Travelling Montenegro

travelling Montenegro

I remember in the very early stages of our travel planning, I stumbled on a picture of the bay of Kotor in Montenegro. I showed Ryan and he immediately got excited about it. That one picture led to a little more research, adding it to our honeymoon list and, then, months later, actually visiting it. We didn’t have a lot to go on, no one we knew had ever travelled to Montenegro, but it was a place that intrigued and excited us. travelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroThe second we arrived and checked into our hotel, Casa del Mare Amfora, we knew we had made the right decision. The staff were so personable and treated us like royalty. It was the only place on our travels where we felt spoiled because it was our honeymoon. This bay did not disappoint either. With clear blue water and a backdrop of mountain ranges, the view from our balcony was dreamy. At times, I had to remind myself that we weren’t on a crystal clear lake in the mountains of Canada…it almost had the same feeling. travelling Montenegro travelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroAlmost every meal we had was at the hotel’s restaurant, which was right on the bay, and it could not have been more delicious. European honeymoontravelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroI could not get enough of the water and our private beach on the Orahovac side of the bay. We were so glad that we decided to stay outside of Kotor city, because we quickly learned that this spot has the clearest waters and best beach. A quick dip in the ocean was the best way to start the day.travelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroIn Kotor’s old town, we spent one morning climbing the city walls – only up about half way but that was enough exercise for me. What we loved about Kotor was that it seemed like a less travelled version of Dubrovnik. It may not have the same lustre as its Croatian counterpart, but it had a lot of charm nonetheless. travelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroWe then journeyed to Our Lady of the Rock by boat. It was a great way to see the whole bay of Kotor. travelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroOur Lady of the Rock is made up of a beautiful, small church that was built in 1630, on an artificial island right in the middle of the bay. So unique!travelling MontenegroWe then hopped over to Perast – the Venice of the Adriatic. This tiny town has only one street but still manages to pack in gorgeous views, excellent restaurants and lots to explore. travelling Montenegro travelling Montenegro travelling Montenegro travelling Montenegro travelling Montenegro travelling MontenegroIf I didn’t love our cozy boutique hotel so much I would say that, next time, we should stay here. But our spot was just too great…travelling Montenegrotravelling Montenegrotravelling Montenegrotravelling Montenegrotravelling Montenegro

By the end of our few days here, we promised each other we would be back again one day. We only caught a glimpse of this beautiful country but what we saw, we loved. I highly recommend that Montenegro makes it on your list of travel destinations!

Happy travels!
