You’ve probably heard that one of the most common design mistakes is having the wrong size area rug. I know the story all too well – you found one you liked but the bigger version was a bit outside the budget, so you opted for the smaller size. Been there!! The thing is though that your rug is the foundation of your room and it brings everything together through one grounding point. You don’t want it to be a small accent piece just floating there but the anchor to the entire space. Not to mention that it really sets the tone and style of the room. I actually like to start most designs with the area rug and then build from there!
If you’ve been following my stories, you know that I’m updating some elements in our master bedroom. I have a 6′ x 9′ area rug that I love at the foot of the bed, but now that we upgraded to our king, it definitely feels too small. I’ve started to consider swapping it out, even though I do still love it! And so, because I’ve been browsing, I thought now would be a great time to share some amazingly affordable area rugs and divulge a few tips when it comes to choosing a rug for a bedroom. Let’s jump in…
- The Right Size Matters: Ideally you want the rug to have around 24″ on all three sides of the bed. But this doesn’t have to be a hard rule in every situation. If you have a smaller bedroom like I do, getting the front legs of the bed frame on the rug will help to anchor the space. You can also float a smaller rug in front of the bed or have 2′ x 3′ rugs flanking either side. My 6′ x 9′ rug looked fine under our queen but ideally an 8′ x 10′ or even 9′ x 12′ would be best.
- Search Smart: What I sometimes do is go on to direct rug brands like Savafieh or Loloi Rugs, or more curated sites like Lulu & Georgia. Once I find a rug I like, I google the name of it or do an image search and try to find it at another retailer for less.
- Find Favourites: Besides crossing your fingers walking into Home Sense, I have a few go to’s for affordable area rugs. I find that Urban Outfitters has some amazing options (not as many bigger sizes though), Rugs USA delivers to Canada, as well as Wayfair and Overstock. I’ve even seen some good options on Amazon. Then, you can catch some great sales at West Elm and CB2 and nab a great deal! Of course if you’re lucky enough to live in the states and can grab a Target area rug, then lucky you!
So, with those tips, here are some really great options that are both beautiful and affordable (3 of which are in my own house too!)
What do you think? See any favourites? #3 has been in Jack’s room for over a year now and it’s holding up really well. Definitely a favourite! #9 is our current master bedroom rug and I love it because it hides the dog fur remarkably well and I love the mix of colours. And #10 was in our guest bedroom but I moved it into our living room just for now…It’s great for a busy family because the darker tones disguise stains well, but it also looks more expensive than it actually is!
Stay tuned for more on our master bedroom revamp shortly! I can’t wait to share it with you! (Oh and if you haven’t seen our master bedroom before, check it out here!)
