One memory I will always cherish around the Christmas season is baking with my family. Whether it was Gingerbread men or our traditional Lefse, my Nana and I always tried to bake something when we were together. My absolute favourite holiday cookie was, and still is, the delicious Christmas Spritz cookie. It just doesn’t feel like Christmas without them. So I decided to share with you the ultimate wreath inspired Christmas Spritz cookie recipe, from my family to yours.
(Nana’s original handwritten recipe which is very precious to me)
This specific recipe has been passed down from my great grandmother – so it is simple! All you need is:
- 2 cups of butter
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 egg
- Almond flavouring to taste
- 4 cups flour (though I tend to do 3 1/2 so the dough pushes through the cookie press easier)
- Cherries to garnish (you need red and green for the wreath!)
Preheat oven to 350. Cream the butter and sugar together. Then mix in the egg and almond flavouring (I added about a teaspoon and a half). Lastly, stir in the flour.
Push the dough through a cookie press (use a star shaped end) into long lines. Cut lines into about 5 inch sections which can then be turned into a circle. And now the piece de resistance, decorate with small, cut pieces of red and green maraschino cherries for that beautiful Christmas wreath look. This part takes the longest but is most definitely worth it. Try and position the cherries at the seam of the cookie to disguise it.
Bake until firm but not too golden – about 10 minutes. This recipe makes a lot of cookies too! More to go around and share with family and friends!
I love these cookies with a cup of hot coffee or tea in the afternoon…or even a cold glass of milk in the morning. Merry Christmas everyone!!Looking for another favourite holiday recipe to try? Take a look at my Mulled Wine drink for the holidays!! Mmmmmmm
