3 Tips for Taking On a Home Renovation (& a Giveaway!!)

home renovation showIt’s that time again! Time for over 250 exhibitors and experts to take over the Edmonton Expo Centre for the 2016 Edmonton Renovation Show, happening next weekend! Attendees of the event will have access to some of the leading industry professionals, like Bryan Baeumler from HGTV’s House of Bryan and Leave it to Bryan!, to get the advice they need to tackle any home renovation project while sticking to a budget.

Now, I do know a thing or two about home renovations myself, especially being married to my very own Bryan Baeumler! No seriously, they’re actually very similar…Ryan even has no hair like Bryan…and I mean, c’mon, their names!! Anyway, I realize most people aren’t married to a renovation pro like me, and need some guidance. Cue the Home Renovation Show! It’s the perfect place to get inspired, ask the right questions and make that reno seem a little less daunting. I also asked my hubby for a little advice for anyone thinking of tackling a home project in the near future. Here are his top 3 tips when taking on a home renovation:

  1. Always get more than one quote but don’t immediately jump to hire the contractor with the lowest price. You’re about to hand over the keys to one of your most valuable possessions and you’ll want someone you can trust. Make sure to do your homework. Have you heard anything about this contractor? Seen his or her work? Make sure your hire someone who is insured and covered, has a detailed contract that you have read fully and, of course, can complete your project in an agreed upon timeline.
  2. Stay open minded when it comes to budget, AND make sure you HAVE a budget! Always preplan when it comes to your spending. If your contractor has budgeted for a tile at around 4.99 per sq. ft. and then you find one you loooove for 10.99, that will create issues for your wallet. Stay open minded too because as soon as you open walls, anything can happen and issues can easily arise during a home renovation. Try to have a little reserve fund in case of hurdles throughout the project.
  3. Always have a proper plan. And that includes floor plans, a products list and timeline for having materials ready. If this isn’t something you feel confident handling on your own, hire a designer to help! Ryan and I love working together and it’s always easier on the clients!

Home RenovationIf you’d like to head on out to the reno show and stop by to see the amazing Bryan Baeumler, who takes the stage at 6PM on Friday and 1PM on Saturday, then enter my giveaway below! Some of Edmonton’s most respected media, designers and craftspeople are repurposing used doors from the ReStore Edmonton with a budget of $100, and then auctioning them off. All proceeds from the challenge will be going to the Habitat for Humanity in Edmonton. I WAS a part of this awesome group of people but then a few things got in the way this January so I had to postpone my involvement till next time!
