If you read my post last year, you know that Ryan and I don’t typically celebrate Valentine’s day in the, oh I dunno, traditional sense. We don’t get each other gifts but opt to DO something together instead. One of our favourite things to do is to find a new restaurant in the city and have a bit of a splurge night, and for all of our Valentine’s days in the past, that is just what we did. One of my favourite meals was at The Marc downtown! It was delicious! This year, however, we need to pinch our pennies a bit more. There are lots of options of things to do in the city that don’t cost a fortune, like the ideas in this article from Avenue Magazine; but, in all honesty, a night at home snuggled on the couch is just fine by me too! So with that in mind, I compiled a list of some of my all time favourite romantic movies, that are perfect to watch again on Valentine’s Day. Some are quirky, some are uplifting and others are the very definition of classic romance. What they all guarantee: All of the feels!
500 Days of Summer
One of the most charming movies I’ve ever seen, where the love story unfolds in a very unique way. Plus I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt AND Zooey Deschanel – dream couple amiright?
Up
The first 7 times I saw this I bawled uncontrollably. I had no idea that Disney could create something that touching and heart wrenching. And then just when you think your heart can’t take anymore, there’s enough comedic relief to bring a huge smile to your face.
Her
I love this movie for its originality. At times it is sad, and others a tad bizarre, but that’s what ultimately makes it charming and tremendously successful. I love what it has to say about the world we live in today – the way technology connects us all and yet, still isolates us.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
This is a film that gets better and better every time you watch it, with more details becoming clear that you may not have noticed the first time. I love it for its quirkiness, its amazing performances and its unforgettable storyline.
Dirty Dancing
My favourite dancing movie combined with good ‘ol fashioned romantic cheesiness. How can you not love this classic. And spending a couple of hours with Patrick Swayze is never a bad thing.
Ghost
My second Patrick Swayze movie! LOL Obviously, I’m a fan! But actually, why I initially fell in love with this movie was because of the music and how captivating their relationship was – the pottery scene?! Hello!!! This will always be one of my romantic go-tos.
The Princess Bride
Oh how I love a good damsel in distress movie! Well actually, not especially…but this one is different! It’s sweet, funny, adventurous (I mean there’s a giant! c’mon!) and so heart warming. It’s one of those movies that will always feel very special.
Midnight in Paris
If I could choose one era to go back to, it would be the roaring 20’s. Bonus if it could be in Paris. In fact, if I could jump in the taxi with Owen Wilson in this film, I would! This is my favourite Woody Allen film because it captures the romance of this city at two points in history perfectly. Careful though…after watching this, you’ll feel an intense desire to jump on a plane bound for the city of lights.
When Harry Met Sally
Oh, the dilemma of friends to lovers! What a great topic for a movie! And this one in particular is one of my fave romantic comedies because it is so witty, expertly directed by Rob Reiner and so amusing. And no one can ever forget the café scene…
Singin’ in the Rain
And finally, one of the most loved and celebrated movie musicals of all time. The music, the dancing, the sweet romance. It’s all charming, upbeat, and so very enjoyable. And it stars one of my all time favourites – Gene Kelly. Don’t need much more than that!
Love this list! The Princess Bride is an absolute, forever fave!!
Oh I am with you there! I JUST re-watched it and I even read the book that came out last year lol
Ah so many good films on this list! Now I want to rewatch the Princess Bride and Midnight in Paris! <3
I know me too!! xo
